City Hall’s data shows DP Ruto’s office owes Nairobi county govt KSh 200 million in parking fees.
It has emerged several state institutions based in the city have not been paying Nairobi county government parking fees with Office of the Deputy President being the most notorious defaulter. Most of the institutions were allocated parking slots in prime spots within the Central Business District (CBD) but allegedly refused to pay parking fees despite numerous demand letters from City Hall. Nairobians angered by Mike Sonko’s plan to increase parking fees to KSh 400 A report by City Hall seen by TUKO.co.ke on Thursday, March 7, revealed Deputy President William Ruto’s office alone owed the county government in excess of KSh 200 million, the highest compared to 10 other government institutions.
According to the Nairobi county government, the said debt has been accumulating since 2014 and numerous attempts to push Ruto’s office to clear the arrears have been futile. Ruto’s office aside, the other state institutions with huge debts owed to City Hall are Milimani High Court, which was yet to clear KSh 105 million for using 72 parking slots and Kenya Police which was assigned 34 slots and owed City Hall a total of KSh 81.8 million. READ ALSO: Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to reduce parking fees by KSh 90 Confirming the reports, Nairobi county government’s parking services director, Toma Tinega noted efforts to push the aforementioned institutions to settle the debts have not been fruitful. “We have done what we could by notifying them and all we can do now is wait for their response and give them time to make payment arrangements,” he told the Standard. TUKO.co.ke understands the revenue generated by collecting the parking fees is needed to facilitate operations at City Hall and deliver essential services to the city residents. Nairobi governor Mike Sonko had even considered reduction of the daily parking fees for motorists in the city from KSh 300 to KSh 200 to lessen the burden for motorists and also boost collection of the much needed revenue. “After consultation with various stakeholders, including ward representatives, we have agreed to slash the parking fees in order not to overburden motorists. I am calling on all Nairobi motorists to pay the daily parking fees through our systems and avoid middlemen who deny the county government the much needed revenue,” the governor said in January 2019.
